Hello Gentelmen.

Is it hard to find a SS with number?

Is the number authentic,on a dagger? It could maybe
be stamped on lates,so there is 2 or more with same number?

I ask this because i am going to buy a numbered SS(have not started loocking)And o not want a "false" numbered dagger.

i apriciate all answers, and if u know about a dagger send PM

If dishonest, I suppose one could find the correct period steel alphabet and numeric stamps on Ebay in Europe or at the equivalent of our swap meets here in the USA.

Hei,
They are harder to find, but not that difficult.
Of course some are possibly stamped after ww2 with numbers...
Buy from someone with a very good reputation is my advice.

Lykke til med jakten på en slik!

In my experience I have never had one that I could trace the number on, they seem to come up blank for me.

I bought a named and numbered SS at the S.O.S. about six or seven years ago. Both stamped into the underside of the lower crossguard. The number couldn't be traced at that time but last year there was a post on GDC by Ross Kellbaugh (SS researcher)saying he could identify the SS man. So I bought the information research package from him but did not tell him about the name being on the dagger. I was very pleased when the the information arrived and the name matched the name on the dagger. As he said, it was a good blind test. I was and am very happy with the dagger and the research package because I know for sure that was who owned it and I didn't know that when I bought it.

Good luck, Jim

As I was the first to research SS Numbers from experience you can ascertain that the more digits in the number, the less the chance the man was an officer.
4 digits is about one in ten
5 digits is about one in twenty
and 6 digits about one in a hundred.
Russ has added a new demention and increased the odds of finding a name, but not of finding an officer.

If you do find a dagger and want some second opinions please post some pics on the forum and I'm sure most of the guys here would be willing to help out a fellow collector in making a big purchase decision.

Good hunting.
