Gentlemen. I am in the process of negotiations in selling my SS Spitzer. I have taken the dagger apart to photograph it by request of the potential buyer. I actually have never touched the hanger so today I decided to open it to check it out inside and what did I find to my astonishment? There is what seems to be a name written on the inside of the hanger in two places. Here are some pics. I can barely make out the letter but maybe you guys that are proficient in old german writing can help deduce what it says. Is it possible to put the name in a database and find the original owner? Thank you all in advance, Raul.
mostly impossible, it takes me with my eyes on certain items long to find the right hand angle to get the right light etc. to identify certain things on leather.
Yeah Robert those are your eyes not mine. To me it says sporle. (maybe sparky? hehe)Ive already had some collector friends see it and they come to the same conclusion. I just have to find out if anyone served with that name. That is going to be pretty tough. cheers, Raul
I took my laptop and tipped it backward to get a reversed image view (x-ray)and it looks to me I can make out only 3 letters in the middle "orl" I could be wrong, but this is what i saw first. I have found writings on the oddest places, on daggers and hangers, in the past. Sometimes it is used as a secondary mark of identification. I do this with some of my personal belongings to where no one else will know the location but me,if something becomes lost or stolen.
You may want to try using Photoshop to play around with color and contrast, as well as using UV light when you take a photograph. Here's a link to where I finally discovered the name on one of my helmets. Comments by "Dom" show where he did some great stuff on a name written on leather.
