Mike,
Its the intial scene setup that takes the time, caustics, lighting textures, shadows etc. Once all that is done its relatively easy to alter colours and subject matter. You also need a good or secondary PC when your rendering the final image, this can take anything up to a day depending on the quality and complexity of the picture. The pictures above took about an hour each to set up and 30 mins to render.
