I use windows picture and fax viewer to open my pics. I recently installed quicktime and now all my pics need to be opened using this programme. I can change the method of opening back to windows picture and fax viewer each time but it is a pain, and when I attach pics to an email, they still come up as quicktime pics. How can I change this?

Regards
Russell

If you are using Winxp you can try this link which restores the windows/fax file association. Be aware though this file modifies your registry and although I am sure it will work fine, its best to create a restore point before double clicking and importing.

Save to your desktop

Or try this first = right click on a picture file, properties, open with

Then select the program you would like to use but make sure the little box at the bottom ( always use this program ) is ticked.

Hi Degens - thanks very much. I have carried out the second suggestion and that works fine, but when attaching pics to an email, it still comes up with the pic as being a quicktime file.

Not too sure what you mean about creating a restore point - could you please elaborate? Yes, using xp.

Russ,
I am using Vista and has been a while since I used XP but from memory and if it is only your e-mail giving you a problem try opening your e-mail program, go to:

TOOLS/OPTIONS/ADVANCED and try restoring defaults

Have you uninstalled quicktime or do you want to keep it installed?.

Hi Degens - many thanks again. I tried the email again, and the pic comes up with a quicktime file logo next to the file description, but now opens with the correct programme, so hopefully this will be fine now.

I had installed quicktime but never used it, then when I tried it on something a couple of days ago, that's when all the pic files changed to a quicktime logo and caused the opening issues.

Thanks again for your help - very much appreciated.

Regards
Russ

Quicktime is a major pain in the a33, it is renowned for taking over your PC whether you want it too or not. Here is a post on the web from someone having the same problem and suggestions to fix along the same lines as described above, in case the problem returns after a restart!,

Thanks Degens, I think I'll dump the quicktime anyway!
