I am getting ready to look for an Honor Ring. There are two things that maybe my friends here can help me with. First, where can I get a copy of Boyles book at a reasonable price? I think that I should read up on the rings first. Second, who would you guys recommend that I talk to about getting a real ring that I can safely buy, at a somewhat reasonable price, and not loose sleep over?

Thanks,

Chief

Welcome to the world of TKHR's. Don's book is hard to come by due to it being out of print for a while. Ebay has them from time to time. They are not cheap though! Craig Gottlieb has a great looking original on his site dedicated to MOSER. It also comes with Don's COA. Again not cheap but a nice ring. Good luck!

I dont know about Don's book, but several of us have them and maybe an extra copy is lying about?

You can get a solid ring from "Militarynut.com" Andy {Legere, I think} who's a good friend of Don, or Craig Gottlieb has a couple REALLY nice ones on his site.

Both places have expensive rings, but then if I could find a good, cheap ring, I would buy it!

Happy Hunting!

Hi Chief,

From our conversations, I knew you'd be at the Totenkopfring forum soon enough Smile Great to see you here, they're quite an addiction unto themselves.

Getting a copy of Don's book is a good start, I believe someone here on the GD had a softcover copy for sale not long ago. If that one's gone, they do pop up from time to time although as I'm sure you've noticed, the price of Don's book has gotten downright dear as of late. I would also suggest that you read many of the older threads here on the honor ring forum to pick up tons of tidbits.

Thanks for all of your input guys! I am putting cash aside at the same time that I am doing my research. Hopefully the right ring and the cash will come together at the same time! I wanted to get the book first, but they seem to be more rare than the rings themselves!

Billy G. is correct. Go back through the forum and read all the comments on each ring shown. When there is a consensus that a particular ring is authentic, study the characteristics of that ring, ESPECIALLY the inside engraving. Do this on lots of rings and after a while, most of the fakes will be apparent.

Not in total agreement, information is not always the best here on the forum (s). Photographs are always good to see.

Don Boyle had put a great deal of time and effort in producing his book and, as far as I am concerned, the best available. As always, there will be some who will not agree however, I'm certain that most will!

My reply has always been thatif you can do better, then do it, don't just talk the talk, walk the walk! Be a positive force, even if it seems that you're being negative at times!

The previous post was unnecessarily argumentative toward JR, who was trying to be helpful, and to the forum in general. No one doubts that Don Boyle is the most experienced and highly regarded Totenkopfring expert in the world. Since his books are either hard to find or very expensive, there's nothing wrong with the information on this forum that you won't find with any forum. And why would someone waste their time viewing and posting on this forum that has poor information? Many of the same people show up on ALL the different ring forums. It's up to the reader to do his homework and sift through the information presented. The one thing the forums do that an expert's book does not, is constantly provide new input of information, such as newly surfaced examples, different ring angle photos, different examples of inside inscription styles, etc. New theories and evidence are presented as to metal content, ring construction, and so on. I DO agree with you that photographs are always good. As for being negative, what are you talking about? I read every post on the thread and there wasn't even one comment that was negative toward Don, his book, or anything, for that matter. You, too, can be a positive force. Since you believe in walking the walk, go out and find a copy of Don's book and send it to the new guy.

Richard, it'd be a hard find to see book photos as big and helpful as those JR just posted! *Thanks JR...

I'm pretty sure there will be 2 new books coming out next year. One on private purchase rings and another on the Honor Ring, kind of a reproduction recognition type book.

Josias, your right. Its the same core group of ring collectors on all the sites. The various forums are an excellent source of info. Getting Dons 'Black Book' and Patzwalls books are mandatory though! Smile

Agreed. You can never have too much information on Totenkopfrings. As for someone's personal life, that's why they invented the phrase, "TMI".

Josias,

The reference to negativism was a statement, not a reflection toward anyone. There are times when one must make negative comments in order to make a positive point and, then there are some who will never get it.
