I'm very fascinated with these rings and would love to own one, but I hardly have done any research on them.

I would probably buy from Andy (Militarynut) with his certification from Don Boyle.

Is this too much to jump from a few uniforms and coins to an honor ring?

I feel like I'm missing out by not owning anything SS related. All the real collectors have them Wink. (Kidding!)

Thanks for your help,

Mark

Mark,, there is pros and cons to everything.. But I don't think you can go wrong investing in an honor ring!
Remember, its one of the few pieces of not only SS regalia but of all of nazi regalia thats named to a person! A gift from H. Himmler himself,,can't beat that...
Happy hunting and let us know what you eventually get...,G.

Thanks!

Is it true that Himmler stopped handing out the rings personally after a certain year? I thought I read that online.

Are there different styles I should look for?

How do I know if I'm paying too much?

Should I be looking for a certain year? Are certain years more expensive?

Should I know what specific unit I want? Ss tv, ss waffen, etc.?

wow, o.k.
There is a early pattern,,,a transitional pattern,,and a late pattern..,,,Aahh, wait a sec...

First off you need to find a copy of Dons newer edition the 'Black Book'. There are many ways to go about getting the book but I'll tell you a 'sure thing' one right now,,,,There is a dealer/collector here that advertisers on this site 'Militarynut'. He sells approved reprinted copies of Dons book. Not a cheapie but its still the book with best basic and advanced of information. It has helped beginners and experienced collectors of the HR since its been out!

Then go back here and start reading old topics.. You can also visit these sites that have HR sections:
http://worldwarmilitaria.com/f...orumdisplay.php?f=65

http://www.militariacollecting...e230a184a26b&act=idx

German site:
http://www.militaria-fundforum...orumdisplay.php?f=85

Russian site:
http://sammler.ru/index.php?showforum=194

There is so much to learn about these rings....Hit a few shows,,see if you can handle a few rings,, ,,find out the criteria how one would get one. The approved dates,,what they mean, Learn the basic die flaws, what the runes mean [90% is covered in Dons book]...,know what your about to spend your hard earned money on! It's all part of the enjoyment of hunting and owning the HR.........

Well said G. I collect Political items but when a ring came my way I couldn't resist. The ring is the only "award" that I know of that had to be returned to the SS after the recipients death. The other cool thing was the ring was designed by Weisthor who was Himmler's Merlin. The bottom line for me is the ring captures the mystic of the SS in one small item. Good luck in your hunt!

I concur with Erich's comment : the SSHr is a fantastic piece of history truly amazing, hard to compare it with any mass production anonymous piece.
