Looking at honor rings of various sizes, something occured to me:
How did they know where to put the runes on the different sized rings? The smaller the ring, the closer they are together. The larger, the further apart they are. And all the while the oak leaves are nicely spaced between, no matter what size. I've read before that it was all stamped. The runes I understand the stamping, but did they stamp the oak leaves as well? Wouldn't they have had to have different size oak leaf stamps then to fit between the runes? I have no actual knowledge, as you can tell, on how to make rings and am interested to know how they were able to make the oak leaves and runes so nicely spaced for the different sizes. Anyone? |

5thSS , The ring is made alittle backwards from some other period rings. Instead of a sizing/joining seam to the rear it is to the front, covered by the skull. The Gahr firm had the mans size and the ends were cut off evenly from both ends, making the proper size when it was all soldered up. , G.

The runes are evenly spaced on the rings,it is only more or less oakleaves that distance the skull from the first set of runes that determine the size.

Thanks JR. After looking at some more photos that is what I finally figured out. So were the oak leaves engraved or stamped? |
