Many collectors don't realize it but jewelry is one of the hardest subjects to photograph!.
You can have the trickest camera,,a little experience and small pieces such as rings will drive you nuts.. Remember,,always look at your finished shot at 100% on your monitor,,if it looks blurry/out of focus to you,it is!!

I know of collectors for the life of them can not take a decent photo. They will send me many photos, one group after the next,,,and usually, all no good! It's hard..
Correct focus,,good/proper lighting, a decent camera, a light box, shades, reflectors is just about a must..

I always do 2 sessions for a ring. I do a nice long set up. Get my lighting and everything right. then take 10 shots, different angles.. I'll throw them on a editing program and see how they are. I'll usually take another group of photos after,,maybe 6 photos. From that group I'll get my keeper..

If you get good with jewelry badges, insignia, cloth will be a breeze!!

Here's a link that will be helpful.

I learned about the complications of photographing small objects while researching my Morton copy HR, GAVE UP. Then I started to experiment with my flatbed scanner, it's the only way, short of a great camera, that I have been able to get close ups. Try it!
Cheers,
Pauli
