Hello This is my first German Ring, The ring itself is made of silver and has a seam in back and is stamped 800 behind the skull. I think the skull is made of something different because it has a golden hue maybe messing or brass and it is very oxidized. The Ring is very small and it fits my little finger. Opinions are appreciated. I have one question should I and is it possible to clean the oxidized skull? Best Regards Thorsteinn.

relichelmet, welcome to the forum...

From your photos and description this looks like a nice original Freikorps era and/or early WW2 period ring..They were very popular and had a few different band styles.

The bands are silver and the skulls were brass. They were soldered with a solder that usually discolored the silver and the brass because of too many dissimilar metals in the solder and also the flux..
You can try cleaning it but be very careful.... ,G.

Thank you for your reply Gaspare, Beutiful ring you posted! is it in your collection? I think I will leave the ring as it is but I am very tempted to clean it. Is there any good way to clean brass?

Best Regards Thorsteinn.

Thor, it is a friends ring. I have a variant with a hammered band..
On cleaning , try a stiff natural brush and some mild soap and warm water first.. If you then want it more thoroughly cleaned or the corrosion off the brass take it to a professional. Any good jeweler should be able to give you some options and what the results will be..,G

Hi Gaspare and friends,
Great rings. I love the teeth on Gaspares ring. I have the same one with the striped band in mint condition. Same thing, with the shank soldered and a brass skull, which looks like brass. Small size too but a little bigger, maybe size 9,5US. Always wondered about if it was pre or during the war, so thanks.

Benten[/QUOTE] Benten, could you post a photo of your crocodile-design ring in this thread? I don't think your original is here anymore, sadly.

At your service BB Smile
The mark is on the band's outside; a capital "H" with a tree and a weak 800 stamp upside down.

Thank you Benten! That's sure a striking ring!....G. - Does your last ring with the hammered band still have the skull soldered on separately? - Bob

I've found ehrenring's ring in another thread, and have added it for comparison.....Note the diagonal grooves tilt the opposite way from the 3 others here.

Well, it took nearly 3 years, but I have one! There are remnants of silver plating in the eye sockets, etc..

I'm interested in the dimensions of all your rings seeing the skull on mine is smaller in relation to the band. Confused The band on mine is 1 cm and the skull is .8 of it.

There are many variations of this 'Tank Tread' ring..
Most have the separately applied skull,,seam to the rear of the band, and tread running right to left , but there's no problem with ehrenring's ,,just a variation..

You caught a really nice one there! with some nice honest wear and tear on it. Again, no problem with the smaller skull ,,just another variation..

Members, please feel free to post yours if you have one........,G.
