Hello,
Another former Long Islander here who also misses those local shows. I used to live about five minutes from the Plattedeutsche so that show was a given. There also used to be a show at the electrical workers hall out in melville if I remember correctly. The Plattedeutsche was also a big gathering place for members of the German American bund back before the war from what I am to understand. Long Island was a nice place to live. An unrepentant New Yorker here obviously LOL.

The Melville show was great! I was like a kid in a candy shop back then [mid 70s]..

The Plattedeutsche is another good one [or used to be]. They still have a couple of old hunting and shooting standards hanging in glass around,,and yes that beer! Wink

How is the Babylon show? Size wise, bigger than Union? Approx how many tables?

The Union show is held at the Boys and Girls club of Union 1050 Jeannette Ave. The contact info # is 201 939 8846.
Babylon is held at the American Legion Hall, 22 Grove Place, #631 643 6347.
Patterson is at the Patterson Rec Center, Front street, #845 878 7106 ( www.thedufflebaginc.com )
G, the Babylon show is not that great these days. The last few shows I haven't picked up anything. It's good for a quick run through and a good breakfast since it's a Legion hall. I would say the size is slightly smaller than Union. There flyer says 100 tables. The Plattedeutsche show is even worse. It used to be Saturday and Sunday, now it's just Saturday. I don't know how much longer that show will last.

Hello,
Yes I remember the Melville show usually being one of the better shows on Long Island. I've been in NC almost five years and even before I moved the Plattedeutsche show seemed to be going down the drain unfortunately. Does anyone know a Gene Ericson that used to attend a few of the Long Island shows? Ed, yes I surely am closer to the Max and SOS shows but haven't gone to many of them. I did go to the Max when it was in Charlotte but I find with dwindling resources, the cost of traveling, motel costs etc. I am lucky I make it to the local shows around here nowadays LOL.
I hated moving out of Long Island but the way prices and stuff are going there it's getting harder and harder to stay in that area I think.
regards,

Bill, sadly Gene past away a couple of years ago. His buddy Ken Huff is still doing the show, although he doesn't seem to have anything new these past few shows.

Hello,
Raymond I'm sorry to hear about Gene's passing. Gene was a nice guy and always helpful and pleasant to deal with. Don't think I know Ken Duff, I usually saw Gene at long island shows with a guy named Tony(can't remember his last name)who lived in Franklin Square. I'm not sure if that Melville show is held there anymore but that show seemed to me to be about the best of the Long Island shows. The Freeport show is relatively new isn't it? The past ten years or so? The Plattedeutsche show which seemed to me to get worse and worse each year was as I say so local to me that I just couldn't not go to it. Not quite a military show but there is a street fair in Roslyn that I had picked up a few nice items at from time to time.
regards
Bill

Hello,
Ed yes a shame about Gene, nice and helpful guy indeed. I wish I was actively collecting when prices were like that! I only bought items when I could afford them but over the years my collection has grown a little larger piece by piece. Regarding the Plattedeutsche, a friend of mine bought a house across the street from there years ago and had to remove part of a wall, in it he found some german books(he doesn't remember what they were)and wires between his house and a number of other houses on the block and he thought maybe it was a communication system set up between various neighbors there who were in the bund. Interesting story and maybe not implausible. But who knows.
