One is marked as a Schwerin, the other is thought to be a Banquaille by the seller.

A collector had contacted me on the Scwhwerin with concerns about originality. What do you guys think on each of these? I'm not going to take chances any more on badges.

I sold the destroyer that has been discussed and the source for debate. since I am nothing more than a casual badge collector, I suppose I'll only collect one of each badge. Id doing so, I should only purchase, accepted, easily recognizeable examples, bot for peace of mind, and resale. If I were an advanced badge collector, I suppose i'd be more inclined to take risks. I learned alot from the events of the last few weeks. The BB, I returned to the seller for a refund. These were the only 2 badges that were questionable in my collection. I think it's safe to assume the BB was in fact bad, no question. The destroyer, I just don't know. many collectors swear it's a fine example. I'm better off with pieces that are not open to debate. Peace of mind with ones collection is priceless.

Anway, here they are guys. Much appreciated in advance.

T

Tom, you might ask for sharper images of the Schwerin. I have reservations about the hinge and the composition. It appears to be a zinc badge?
This link will take you to my Schwerin example.

The hollow back is not a French made badge. Nor is a hollow back presently accepted as period construction.

Tom the badge is not correct a poor casting and does not conform to anything attributed to schwerin. And the stamped badge is certainly a fun piece the pin and catch assy as very similar to the destroyer badge you just sold I might add especially the pin.

Thanks for the info guys. Another collector had reservations about the Schwerin as well. THe hollow back has gotten bad reviews all the way around.

Regarding the hardware on the hollowback, not quite the same as on the destroyer I sold. There were actually some striking differences, however, the hinge itself has some similarities. I had written off the hollow back for the most part, but the Schwerin marked piece has elicited different opinions. It sounds like it may be one to avoid. Anytime there are differing opinions of this magnitude, it's a clear sign to run.

Thanks again guys,
T

I read of zinc Schwerin's but have not located a picture of one. Comparing the blurry image to other Schwerin zinc examples, Coastal Art. for one. The hardware is comparable. At first I did not see the round base plate under the catch on the example in question but I believe it is there in the shadows.
Tombac destroyer examples are hard to beat as far as aesthetics. On the other hand zinc alloy examples tend to be more affordable.

( I did locate a zinc Schwerin Destroyer badge and it compared favorably).

Two destroyer examples on this site.

Baqueville badges are controversial to some, not to others.

My goal in all of this is to avoid controversial badges. I am trying to stay away from badges which i'll have to argue for and make excuses for. That's not my bag. After the last two badges, controversial badges are a headache. Not fun when it's time to resell them either. Tried, true and accepted badges from now on.

Thanks again guys,
t
