I bought a German belt buckle with a piece of belt with it at an estate sale this weekend. I've been around old military stuff a few years now and I am convinced this is the 'real deal' although I have never owned one before. I would like to know the exact name for it, the maker's name and anything interesting I should know about it. I also got a belt there but it appears to be different than the belt that would have went with this buckle....there was no buckle with the belt. A BIG question I have is what is this buckle with belt fragment (dated 1940) worth? Thanks and here are some photos:

Looks like you picked up a good, stamped nickel, Overhoff & Cie buckle. Unfortunately the attached leather tab is not original to the buckle, as SS buckles were not issued with them. Rather, it was likely removed from an army buckle and added to it . . . whether by the soldier who wore the buckle or the vet who picked it up, neither can be said but it is an added item for sure and not issued with the buckle, sorry. ~ Ian

Thnak you so much for the information. I will keep it with the buckle. The threads are broken on the leather tab so it comes off readily and could have been put on easily. Here is a photo of the belt that came from the same estate; it was under a table with someother 'jumk'; is this the correct belt for the buckle? If it is permitted by the forum I really would like to know what this is worth? I have searched some on the Internet and found one advertised at $795.00 but, it was unsold and still available. Is my buckle in that price range? Thanks.

Hello,

yes the buckle is a fine Oferhoff orginal. made long time before the WW2 until 1936 out of newsilver.

the leather strap isn´t original. SS buckles never had one. you can remove.

the belt is not out of the same period. it has a steel hook.

the hook of the belt (Gegenhaken) don´t match the hook at the buckle (Fankhaken) realy good.
i tryed be my peaces.

you need the belt type used in bevor and during the WW1 and the weimar time to made a matching set.

The buckle is an original made by the Overhoff firm between 1931 and 1935 (most common variant) but has been modified from its original condition. Prongs have been changed and post is showing an obvious repair job (most likely when prongs [probably along with corresponding postsleeve assembly] have been changed). The leather tab was also probably added at that time (not uncommon). This is a set absolutely expected for late war use (starting after 1943) when the Waffen SS was using whatever they could put their hands on. I would personnaly never remove or change anything since it is the best way to confirm all different components could have been associated pre-1945. If you try to sell the buckle only, a true SS buckle collector will find right away that prongs / post have been messed with and most likely will discard the buckle. With the set the way it is, he/she will come to the same conclusion I did and will likely buy (as long price is correct of course). I will not give you a price in $$ since I am not here for that, but will just say that the full set (buckle/tab/belt) worth (to my eyes) the same price as a very nice early Overhoff buckle since now the full set legitimates the buckle alteration and such belt and tab do not have any great value by themselves.

Thank you both; that is good information. At the fleamarket this AM I saw an acquaintance who collects German items and I told him about it. Without seeing it he said around $500 but since he collects these I don't know if he was "lowballing" me or not. I will continue to research it to try and determine it's worth. Again, thanks for the history of the buckle and the points made about it being altered. Best regards.

the leather tap and the belt surely put on the buckle in the newest past. often this people are thinking the tap is missing... but this is not correct.

the maker of the tap don´t match. If you want a original condition... best way is to remvoe. the stitching is also open...so it is surely a new made arrangement for a better offer.

the rzm only ordered without tap.

taps often can be found original fitt by RLV or SA buckles for NSKK. Not by SS ones

The belt is one made between 1940 and 1943.
the modell 1943 had no fixing strap for the buckle.

also the hook don´t match the bucklehook for 100%.

If someone offered you, say $500.00 for the set, you should take it, considering the buckle is altered..he was not 'lowballing' you by any means..

The buckle by itself would be worth far less in its present condition..

How many "matching sets" or how many leather belts strictly made for the SS were still worn by the Waffen-SS in 1944 / 1945?
