Generally the dagger looks good but there are some points that concern me:
The lower crossguard seems to be the "straight look" spezimen but the grip seems to have a curve (see esp. #7).
Normally the instructor (chained) daggers are not marked so this Naumburg mark at least is not common for an instructor´s dagger. The number is relatively high which at least even is much more uncommon for a chained instructor´s specimen.
Such a dagger should be seriously classified only after having it in hands.
Chained NPEA dagger, when original, today go for 5000-7000 USD.
I think Ron weinand is the man for NPEA daggers, you might contact him per mail to take a look here?

Ray,

No MAX for me. I checked the crossguard font against a number of Naumberg examples I have saved & it is consistent with those I've observed over the last 5-6 years. As Wotan mentions, the inventory number is quite high. In fact I don't believe I've seen a 4 digit dagger before, let alone a 4 digit instructors dagger. Initially I thought maybe the 3 was an attempted first strike of the 8 but it does appear not to be the case, very odd. The double arrow on the tang is like the chained leaders piece I had. I'd like to hear what Ron has to say on this one. Can you get better pics?

The dagger has some points that make me question the combination. The N in the serial number does not match another leader in my book from Naumburg (N260) and the scabbard should have a lower fitting with flush mounted screws (you see this with the DRGM marked box and the leader daggers from this school).
Also, with the missing paint on the bottom part of the scabbard, it may have been rusted and someone replaced it and didn't reuse the flush mouted screws in the process.
Lastly, the chain is connected to the clip incorrectly, as it is missing a connecting link (this could be original, but would need to see it in hand).
The crossguards should have the horseshoe, star S internal marking.
Do you have my latest NPEA book?

I think the number on the dagger is "273". I think the "3" was put on the wrong way, then put OVER the wrong sided one therefore looking like "8". As the result was nothing looking like "3" it became lined out and put on aside in the right way. Odd but surely could be period.
273 is not extremely high for a pupil´s dagger but I think high for an instructor´s dagger.

I have found that the school's numbered the instructor's daggers in the same sequence as the student dagger in most cases when the school owned the piece. This is true in Naumburg's case as the leader in my book, which I know is original, is numbered N260.
