I have seen a dagger for sale advertised as a vintage German Hirschfanger dagger with stag grip marked Edgemark Solingen. Is there any connection with WW2 with a dagger like this or was it something else?

Valhalla,

A Hirschfaenger is normally a hunting or forestry sidearm. (edged weapon) They come in a variety of lengths and patterns and finishes, gilded, silvered and chemically-patinated, too.

My best suggestion would be to go to Houston Coates forum and download his guide to these weapons before you buy anything. Study this for a while and then ask questions on that forum to clear up any gray areas that you may have. Also, read as many threads as you can while there, it might give you a feel for what is good and what's not.

Most of it will come down to being able to identify correct maker's marks and etch patterns that are proper for their time-frames.

"Edgemark," sounds like a postwar fabrication.
It might be pleasing to the eye, but certainly not pre-1945. I sincerely urge you to take your time to study before you make any purchases in these areas. There are good ones around but, you just gotta know how to spot 'em. Wink
