I do not know if this one is original (period) but the overall form is typically for a socalled "Spund-Bajonett". a bayonet type which was put with it´s grip into the muzzle opening of a (military) rifle. Only fixed by the enlarging of the grip next to the crossguard. you could not fire the gun with the bayonet affixed. The forerunner of modern bajonets attached at the side of the muzzle (so you can fire even when the bayonet is fixed).
