A seller sent me these two photographs of two swords he is selling..... I know nothing about swords but I am suspect because of the way the emblems are mounted ! Are these reproductions or fantasy pieces....... or real ?

Sorry for the pictures, thats all he has sent me !

I wonder if you can provide the seller's name and location? Did the offer to sell these swords arrive unsolicited?

I looked in the reference galley and I don't see any swords that look like these... I am leaning towards fantasy pieces, that said no one is responding so I am assuming that they are causing some confusion..... so my next question is: has anyone seen swords that look like these ? If not then I will walk, if they have I will try to compare.

Thanks

You're looking at two Third Reich Police swords. The one with the wire wrap on the grip is the officer's model and the other is the NCO model. I'm not up on repros of these so can't say for certain that they're original but they look good to me. Maybe some pictures of the blades and maker marks could help others verify originality.

Jay,

Try looking at some dealer web sites for comparisons. These are fairly common so it shouldn't be too hard to find a few.

Imrobil,

Thank you very much for the info, I researched Third Reich Police Swords and found photo's of both. I agree, they look good. I was orignally leary of the way the emblems were mounted, I did not realize the handles were made of leather !

I asked the seller for pictures of the maker marks and will post, hopefully someone can (then) give me an idea on value...

Thanks

Jay

Handles should be wood that were stained black. silver eagle for enlisted, copper for officer. http://www.germanmilitaria.com/ has a pair of them, the enlisted is $1,672 ant the officer (which leaves a little to be desired) for $1,190.00. Not a very good pic, these are the 3 of mine

Blitburg,

Thanks for setting me straight on the handles, one website that was selling them said the handles were made of leather......

Here are the maker/assemblers:

The NCO sword:

Herm Rath

Solingen

Under this is a diamond symbol encompassing 2 stylized S shape or lightning bolts. These marks are similar to the SS collar dogs, except the S shapes overlap in the middle.

Officer Sword:

Robert Klaas

Solingen

The name is at the top, Solingen at the bottom, but the engraving encircles a symbol of 2 storks standing next to each other, beaks touching.

Thanks

Jay

No problem. Makers are legit and the SS inspection runes on the NCO are not uncommon. The eagle on the officers looks like it's been replaced with one from a police bayonet.

After many months of haggling, I am now the proud owner of these two swords.

Now for the questions: I know value of swords and other sharp objects is directly related to the maker.......... how do these fair ? and what is the approximate value of these swords ?

As Imrobil mentioned I as well have seen both copper and non copper insignia on the officers sword, so not sure on if this is correct or not ? And side note: the NCO blade is very shiny, almost mint !

Regards
Jay

I just bought a Rath, same runes in a diamond. It was something they did. I think they were distributors not makers.

Good catch.

Thanks for the comments......

Any idea on collector value as opposed to dealers on the web (which seem to a lot higher then what we pay) ?
