I have always liked the Prussian (German) Faschinenmesser, short swords. I have 5 in my small collection. They do not have scabbards, but I have to taken them as I find them. My question is, can someone help me ID the marks on the last one I found, it have a brass handle and it is marked in to places with a crown and have the maker and Regimental Number.

It looks to me like the Saxon Artillerie-Faschinenmesser model of 1849. With the cipher of King Johann (“JR” from 1854-1873). Which has been (later?) unit marked to a Saxon (12th) medical company possibly as a part of a Saxon Artillery Train (horses and wagons not rail) - [tentative ID].
Nice short sword!! |
