Just stumbeled across this one on a swedish auction site. Havent seen one like that before, and I do not know what it is. No marks at all on the blade. Personally, I dont find it very attractive, but I am curious about what it is, and about its age.

Thanks

It might be my monitor but that stag looks kinda light. Maybe a put together piece?

That is actually the only thing strange I noticed about it, also. However, I have absolutely no idea at all about what it is. If I was to make a guess, I would say it is older than ww2, and does not have anything to do with any association, plus the grip is not original to the cutlass itself. But that is all I could say, and these are only wild guesses...
Would be fun to know anythin more about it.

If anyone can say what it is, could you also tell me how common those are? Just because I havent seen one before, that doesnt mean a thing...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is a turn of the century piece with probable iron fittings. I like it a lot but agree that the grip is not original to the piece.

Houston:

Thank you

Actually, I didnt notice it first, but then I saw those small animal heads on the crossguard, and more or less fell in love with them. I am considering to place a bid on it, just because of those...

Is it possible to tell anymore about it, by just looking at the pics? I just assume it is some private purchase cutlass, and not somehow connected with some organisation? Do you believe the metal parts have been plated, or different from now in some other way, and would you say the current grip is similar to the original one?
I find this quite interesting, thank you for your answer.

I just realized that it was not very clever to ask if the fittings were plated... dont pay attention to that one, sorry.

Can you post a link to the auction site, I also like it and have seen a very similar piece a couple years ago.

Thanks

Personally I think it's an austrian piece. pre 1900, iron fittings as Houston mentioned, the shape of the fuller(Blood groove)I have seen on other Austrian pieces and the simple case hardened scabbard mounts. To get that grip off would not be easy, the tang of these pieces are peened over on the top of the boars head pommel and usually disguised as part of the hair of the boar, it would mean drilling the peened area and then fitting a new grip and then peening it over again, this would decrease the length of the tang and of course the grip would be shorter.I'm not sure it is a new grip.
