Gary,
Didn't want to derail your intended discussion on your belt buckle thread, so thought to start a new thread for Shooting Cups. Thanks for showing your shooting cup which IMO is the best you can find, a historical piece coming from the top of the food chain. There are so many different varities of these trophies. They make great displays and since you showed yours I had to show mine. Silver and gold cup from 1875 w/case. Any more out there. Thanks for looking and enjoy. Smile

Hi all, For those of us that didn't know, I wanted to add some general information.
The trophy shown above was the prize cup, not from a regional meet, but from the big National Shooting Meet of 1875 which was held in Stuttgart for that year, each national meet was held in a different city and would last about eight days, so you can imagine the fun. All of the prizes/awards were kept in what is called the Gaben Tempel for display and there was some great prizes to be won. Each of the awards/prizes were generously donated from different companies and organizations as well as from royality. Solingen as we know donated some fantastic prizes. There is a lot of tradition when it comes to this organization and I can imagine the excitement and fun to be had by all. Lets not forget the beer flowing endlessly.
The German National Shooting organization started w/a proposal at the Gotha national shooting Fest of 1861 and was gladly adopted. One year later they held there first National meet at Frankfurt in 1862, w/about 10,000 particapants, coming from all over Germany. Other countries as well were represented including the U.S. Thanks for looking.

Mikee,

Many thanks for letting us take a look at your Koenigs Preis, it certainly is a magnificent beauty, and along with the case ... how rare is that?! I'm certain there aren't many as nice as this in circulation, scarce as the proverbial "hen's teeth."

Thanks for the background info on the shooting clubs, too. The importance that these gala events played in German society can't be stressed enough, they were
truly part of the social fabric. My father told me about the first time he was allowed to attend a big festival with my grandfather as a young boy. He said it was an amazing carnival-like atmosphere with plenty of great food, music, dancing and singing, parades and world class competitve shooting. In short, a good time was had by all! Smile

Best regards!

Bill

While this one is not up to Mikee's cased trophy, it still exudes some beautiful attributes. Dated 26th June 1899. It has 4 main panels, I'll show a picture of each.

Cheers

Gary

Gary, WOOWEE! Eek
That is one nice cup. An expression of art at it's finest, as is the overall design of the cup. It just doesn't get any better than this, with scenes such as these. Are there any marks on the bottom? Thanks for showing it.
