I have a chance to acquire this very old hunting sword. I know not as sexy as a 3rd reich engraved piece, or with the elegance of an Imperial blade, but this was one meant to be used.
I am wondering what the collective thoughts are regarding age and possible value. It certainly looks hand forged, it still is quite sharp. Well made, well balanced. any ideas? Thanks! Jerry ![]() |

Jerry,
As for age I'd venture a guess at about the early 1800's - teens, twenties, thirties, judging from the blade pattern and the style of the crossguard, too. The fact that the blade is unmarked and that it's not in the best of overall condition prompts me to advise you not to pay too much for it, maybe $200-300 at best. I've seen some beautiful early pieces without scabbards sell for around the $500-600 mark. Unless you really like this Jagdschwert example I'd say bide your time, you'll find another one, either utilitarian or dress for just a wee bit more. This old workhorse looks like it might have been "ground-dug" or in a cold, wet barn for a long, long time. If I see anything similar to this one I'll come back to the thread and let you know. Good hunting! Bill |
