I presume this is Forestry/Hunting related, this pair just arrived this morning, the frog I know about it's the other item I'm not sure, it was sold with the frog, anybody recognise what it is?. It has a cream elasticated strap across the front, the leather is slotted inside and under the elastic.Marked 16 on the rear at the bottom.

This is an easy one: the item to the right is a leather protector for a "Drilling" rifle (two shotgun barrels, one rifle barrel beneath) and it is fitted to shotgun barrels cal 16ga as you see by the stamp.
Due to the elastic strap it can be put over the gun muzzle and the sight. I think it is a nowadays item.
Nice shorter variant hanger you´ve got with it.

Thanks Wotan, do you know if they used them in the period before or during the war, the construction is consistant with other leather work I have seen of the 1920's and 30's, though it could just as easily be from the modern period as well, it is very well made. Thanks once again for your excellent insights.

As I wrote, I think this certain one is a nowadays (modern) item. Especially because of the elastic strap. Old-Period muzzle protectors I am aware of do have a leather strap (with buckle to fix) wrapped around.

Funny how things turn out to be different than what you think, I wondered why the frog looked a little limp especially when I tried it on a couple normal hirschfängers, just too slack on everything I tried, then it hit me, if it doesn't fit on a normal hirschfänger then lets try this old skinning knife pattern, I really had no idea it would fit one of these. These are very difficult to come by and a real bonus for me.

the drilling muzzle cap can be pre WWII, but must not. I own a similar one, wich was made in the 30th. They made it with these elastic straps. The factories produced the same kind of protectors after the war - and until today. Yours looks old, may be pre war made, may be made during the 50th or 60th, a nice piece.
