Fantastic old hirschfangers have so much to offer the collector. One seems to come out of nowhere with a cross guard and scabbard that have detail this is hard to believe. This was the first one that is a bronze tone. The blade has German writing in script..”R.R. hoj Shiverfeger in Wien. Then years later another comes along but this time with all silver fittings but the cross guard is the same as the gold tone one bought maybe 10 years earlier. I do not know what material the black swirl grip is made of but it is great to the piece. The hounds and the hog on the scabbard are a work of art on their own. Everything is very deep in detail and workmanship. Think about the Hunting Hirschfanger. These pieces were not made by the thousand like the military daggers. I do not know what the production and crafting the cross guards and other attachments could have been. You can tell by their use and time period of these two pieces that they were made or copied to each other but the original design was made by one person or firm. The time machine seems to be the only yardstick for this type of design.

Ralph, Beautiful pieces as all your stuff is, I especially like the spiral grip and the fox head scabbard lug on the stag piece. I have never seen the like of the crossguards before, to have them matching is very special. Not sure what to make of the knot though, it certainly looks like it has always been there.I should think the spiral grip is some kind of polished horn.
Lovely pieces Gary |
