Well-the frog is Czech not German. My initial over all feeling about it is not good. The background looks too gray, detail is lacking especially to eagle and swastika, borders on the edge and spine are not defined etc. But--the rivets look good on the front and I like the style of the SS runes. Let's see the rivets on the back side.

This bayonet's hilt is consistent with those seen on Puma products. The fit of the grip plates is nice & flush & the obverse rivets look pretty good. Maker mark is the later Puma variety & the hilt plating seems consistent with a later production piece. Please show a reverse grip plate picture.

The etch is unusual looking in terms of the font which I've never seen on a Puma etched bayonet before. The grey frosting on the etch background looks very unusual & the objects are lacking some overall detail. The etch borders resemble another SS bayonet owned by JohnZ although John's bayonet has a different font & does not have the helmet or eagle with swaz motif.

Not sure on it's authenticity except to say anything attributed to the SS should be scrutinized even more than the garden variety etched piece.

thanks Houston and Billy. my gut was telling me something was wrong with the lack of detail to the etch overall, but the borders and the runes didnt set any alarm bells ring for me. these are the only pics i have at the moment, none of the reverse grip plate sorry. i will see if i can get some and post.
thanks for your help fellas.

Peter:

I would like to hear about this etch from Wayne or Ron.

But, I will say that I am concerned about the poor definition on the eagle... it looks cartoonish, doesn't it? That alone would scare me.

John, i would say that is a brilliant description of the eagle 'cartoonish'.....
i am not too keen on it, but i am no expert! maybe the guys in the know have other thoughts...

Gentlemen:
This one is too easy...and the most obvious Red Flag has not yet been discussed. Prior to 38 ROBERT KLAAS used the SLANTED PATTERN on their etched dress bayonets. PUMA would not have ordered from Klaas as they did their OWN etching and did not share their patterns with anyone. The PUMA patterns are much different as seen in their catalog (see my book).
2nd their is no bottom border to this etch.
3d, the detail in the etch leafing and bird leave a lot to be desired. No etching firm would let an etch like this leave their production line especially one for the SS!!!

I must side with Wayne and Houston on this one.
WHY would the helmet have the national colors shield and be an SS blade??
Also, I don't like the background on the etch and the font to the lettering just doesn't seem correct to me.
