Can someone help me identify this item. I believe it is a German Police Bayonet Letter Opener. The blade is double edged only about 3in. on the top side. the total length is 8 3/4in. It has a German Police emblem on the grip. No other markings on it. Any information on it would be appreciated.
hi,,,it looks to me like imperial style bayonet,i have one very similiar,in fact, identical but with a imperial patriotic decal on the scabbard, the eagle may have been added postwar,as the bayonet aging/wear seems inconsistent with the handle emblem, altho aluminum does not in all cases show extreme wear, still,i would venture to guess that the emblem is a post war enhancement....

I have additional pictures. The bayonet's total length is 8 3/4 inches. The Police Emblem on the handle is aluminum. The blade is razor sharp on one side. Not sure if there are any markings on the bayonet's blade as it is rusty/tarnish. Any help identifying it would be appreciated.
Hi Matthias, Thanks for your response back to me. In regards to the condition of the Police Eagle emblem, it is made out of aluminum so I wouldn't think it would rust/tarnish as the bayonet's blade.
Some one from another forum suggested that it looks like a WWI close-combat knife with a 3rd Reich Police dagger eagle stuck on the grips. May be a MADE-TO-ORDER souvenir after WWII to bring home.
In any case, it is an interesting piece that I hope to find out more about. Thank you.
Hi magnum,I think they are just letter openers,I have quite a few of them, some have the coats of arms of towns on the scabbards & some have company names on the blades,I will look some photos out, nats
