It looks like a "Line Throwing Gun" (or Pistol)
These are still used today by both Military and Civilians at Sea. Are there any markings on it to lock in a production date ?

No no no ...you're getting confused here Johnny. You've seen a larger version of that Line Throwing Gun before ..The German's had a special Unit that used them during the War ...here's what their Badge looked like --
"Der Moby Dick Award"

Seriously though ...they are funky looking firearms but ..people do collect them. And I bet a WW2 Military version is not that easy to find. I wouldn't mind owning a nicely marked one .
