I carefully removed the nine to see the back and reattached no problem. These look to have been on there forever.

Eric, I have seen hundreds if not thousands of these holsters in my line of work. I have never seen one like this before. Police holsters were sometimes stamped with the 4 serial numbers into the leather. These metal numbers placed here would be cumbersome and get into the way of the wearer I would think. At any rate they are not a standard issue, put on by the Soldier who captured it is my guess. Does the serial of the pistol match it? Unit markings are almost unheard of this late. They are made up of letters and numbers, periods etc. Jerry Burney

These numbers are for the DAF. I don't believe this organization wore a sidearm, so I would say the vet did it. They liked to add insignia to there captured weapons. There was a holster with an SS eagle not to long ago posted here. I've been looking for that style of numbers for awhile to complete my DAF tunic, so if you want to get rid of them let me know.

Eric, If they do not match the pistol...Perhaps another pistol long gone! Hard to tell why they would be placed there instead of the usual Nazi Eagle, Police badge or death head. Jerry Burney

Could be a US unit #, there were some 4 digit axillary units late in the war; QM, Ord., Supply, Transport, etc.

I really don't think the Germans would have done it.
