Went to a buddy's house tonight, and he showed me a piece that his father brought back. It is a desk eagle with no base, but Nuremberg style, but with a goldish covering? Gold leaf or paint? opnions please?

Yes, the Spear Style or Nuremburg Style down winged eagle does come in silver and gold. Usually the smaller one is the one found in gold and will have an RZM mark on the base on the reverse.
